Balance and stability are a big challenge as we age

There are many underlying factors that lead to balance and stability issues. Although losing your ability to balance yourself can become scary with the fear of falling, the risk of injury and even losing your independence. The good news is most issues that lead to reduced balance and stability can be corrected!

The most common areas that cause balance and stability issues:

  • Inner Ear Inflammation
  • Loss of Strength
  • Restricted Range of Motion
  • Poor Postural Alignment
  • Reduced Vision
  • Lack of Core Strength
  • Disrupted Developmental Movements

Inner ear inflammation

Inner ear inflammation disrupts your balance organs and causes vertigo and other balance related issues.

One common area that needs to be addressed is removal of foods that cause internal inflammation. This change, along with specific balance exercises and training help resolve many balance issues caused by inner ear inflammation.

Loss of strength

As you age, especially if you do not participate regularly in strength training, you lose muscle which directly leads to strength loss. Over time, this loss of strength will make simple tasks of stepping up onto a curb or sidestepping a simple obstacle a bigger challenge.

The remedy is to participate in regular strength training. And this training only requires you to slightly challenge yourself in order to be effective.

Restricted range of motion

Restricted range of motion is caused by a loss of flexibility and reduces your ability to move (mobility). When you’re tight and lock mobility, even normal objects you never used to think twice about become major issues that you must slow down and traverse around in order to maintain your balance.

By improving your range of motion, you improve your mobility which allows you to navigate your daily life with less worry, stress and fear.

Poor postural alignment

Poor postural alignment changes your center of gravity, usually shifting this center of gravity forward which puts you in a fall risk just standing. Poor postural alignment also creates an imbalance within your body leading to some muscles being much more active during movement.

This imbalance in muscle activation makes it more difficult to catch yourself if you lose your balance.

Reduced vision

As we get older, our vision tends to get weaker. Although you should have regular checkups and care for your vision with a qualified medical professional, participation in balance training that incorporates no vision training helps tremendously in improving your balance and stability, even if you have vision challenges or you end up in reduced vision situations such as nighttime.

In addition, one of the major areas we tend to lose is our peripheral vision which negatively affects our ability to recognize objects on the ground that we can trip over. We lose our peripheral vision because we don’t use it in many cases. I focus specifically on peripheral vision training to improve your ability to navigate your surroundings without losing focus on life right in front of you!

Lack of core strength

All movement starts within your core. And a strong, balanced core helps stabilize you and your body, even in more challenging situations. Most people have weak core muscles. And those that train the core regularly must do so in a functional manner that improves their balance and stability.

This takes training the core in a standing position (or at least kneeling). The good part is that you can incorporate your core into many of the balance, stability and strength exercises so that you don’t have to add extra exercises to your routine!

Disrupted
developmental patterns

In the first 12 months of our lives, we develop structure and movement patterns that are designed to allow us to hold good postural alignment and move with good mechanics throughout our life.

If any of these patterns are not developed or an injury occurs that disrupts any pattern, this will adversely affect your ability to maintain good balance and stability. Any pattern that is not developed properly must be restored in order to hold ideal posture and move with ideal mechanics.

Noticeable results quickly

One of the most encouraging aspects about balance and stability training is that you’ll notice an improvement in your balance pretty quickly. Within the first few sessions, you’ll already start to notice that you are more stable!
