Many health and fitness issues are often attributed to the aging process. One common issue is weight gain with a difficult time losing this weight. But is this really an age issue?

When you look around at your peers, you will often see many of these people struggling with weight gain. This will lead the average person to believe that excess weight is simply an age issue and outside of a massive effort, there is nothing that can really be done to lose this weight and keep it off.
The good news is that this is not the case. The reason people gain weight as they age has more to do with the long term effects of habits and choices rather than a normal part of the aging process.
There are four major areas to address:
- Hydration
- Pace of Eating
- Eliminating Problem Foods
- Food Quality
Hydration
One of the biggest keys to weight loss is getting your body fully hydrated. This helps you in so many ways that includes satiating your appetite, flushing your body out, reducing your energy drain, and increasing your metabolism. When you consider that almost 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, while nearly 74% of Americans are overweight, it’s no wonder why we have an obesity problem in this country.

The key to hydrating is drinking water. Many people either hate the taste of water or think that any drink that has water in it such as coffee or a mix added to their water counts as drinking water. To properly hydrate, you need to consume water that’s high quality or that has been filtered through a high quality system. I highly recommend adding a pinch of Celtic sea salt to your water in order to add the crucial minerals and electrolytes back into the water. The Celtic sea salt aids in hydration while also improving the taste of the water for most people.
The amount of water you consume should be half your body weight (in pounds) and that’s the amount of ounces you should drink daily. For example, if you weigh 100 pounds, divide that number in half which is 50. This means that you should drink 50 ounces of water daily.
Pace of Eating
The speed at which a person eats their food is one of the most overlooked aspects of normalizing that person’s weight. Over the years, I have found that almost every person I have ever worked with that wants to lose weight, eats their food extremely fast. There are many reasons for the speedy pace of meals such as eating on the go, eating while working, or just plain eating without thinking about how fast they are consuming their meal.

When you eat fast, you are doing two things that increase your chances of weight gain. The first is that you are eating without chewing your food completely. This food cannot be fully digested enough for your body to process your food properly. The second issue is that your body does not have enough time to become satiated by the food that you are eating. This directly leads to overeating.
Another issue that arises for people looking to lose weight is eating until they feel their stomach is full. You need to focus on eating just enough food to become satiated rather than eating until your stomach is full. Eating until you are full is too much food.
Eating just enough until you are satiated will bring you enough resources and energy for all of your activities. And the best part, if you find that you need more food, you can always have a snack.
By slowing down the pace at which you eat your meals, you allow your body a chance to take in the food that you are eating and break it down and properly digest this food. This also allows your body the chance to become satiated by less food.
Eliminating Problem Foods
When a person eats foods that do not work for their body, the initial effects may be subtle to the point that the person does not notice these slight issues. However, over time, the result is weight gain that the person can’t seem to lose.
These foods cause internal inflammation within their body. This causes them to have a general bloated look along with their stomach and intestinal area to bloat out. There are several foods that can cause this internal inflammation, even if these foods are high quality.

The most common of these foods are gluten, soy and dairy containing foods. I recommend that you eliminate any food that contains gluten (also wheat containing foods), soy and dairy for a substantial amount of time, at least a month and see if there is a change for the better. Often you’ll notice other changes such as a reduction in: gas, intestinal bloating, mental fog, and increased energy in addition to the reduction in general bloated look. I do recommend reintroducing the gluten, soy and dairy one at a time and pay attention to any adverse side effects from any of these. Again, this can be bloating, gas, diarrhea, mental fog, or weight gain. Any adverse side effects from reintroducing any of these foods is a clear sign that you should not consume that food, at least for an extended period of time.
Eliminating foods that cause internal inflammation will make it much easier to lose that extra weight.
Food Quality
Another issue that needs to be addressed when it comes to diet is ensuring that you eat the highest quality foods that you can. You also want to limit highly processed foods, even if these are high quality. There are two main issues with eating low quality and highly processed foods. First, the lower the quality of food, the more toxins are in these foods.
When you ingest toxins, your body will increase your fat storage in order to deposit these toxins in your fat rather than your organs or muscles. The second issue is low quality and highly processed foods do not provide enough nourishment to your body. The longer the shelf life and the lower the quality the food is, the more devoid of nutrients the food possesses.
This is why you can feel full, yet hungry. Even with a full belly, if the food you just ate did not nourish your body enough, your body seeks out the nourishment it’s looking for. This will often cause you to overeat. And the additional food that a person eats in this situation doesn’t add the nourishment the body is looking for. But it does often make the person feel sluggish and lethargic.

Make sure to eat the highest quality foods that you can. And make sure to limit the amount of highly processed foods you eat, even if these foods are higher quality. This will help you lose any excess pounds.
